New Collectible Cars
New Collectible Cars, Future Classic Cars, Could these 10 performance models be tomorrow's collectibles? We think so.
You've probably heard that the value of a new car depreciates 50 percent as soon as it's driven off the dealer's lot. That's not entirely true. If it were, it wouldn't make any financial sense to buy a new car. However, the value of a new car does, in fact, depreciate the moment you leave the dealership. But by how much? That varies by automobile, but the average is about 9 percent, and after a year, a new car's value will decrease by about 20 percent.

Subcompact cars
Subcompact cars
Subcompact cars. The redesigned Honda Fit tops other cars in this group. The Honda Fit (available to subscribers) became a hot-selling vehicle when gasoline prices topped $4 per gallon. A redesigned and slightly larger Fit arrived in the fall, and it improves on the space-efficient formula that made the last one such a hit with buyers.
With cargo capacity rivaling that of a small SUV, the Fit has a clever interior with a backseat that can fold different ways to accommodate long cargo or bulky items. Performance and driving position have improved, but the Fit's fuel economy has dropped slightly.

Cars made of strange stuff. Everyone knows you make cars out of steel – or aluminium, or carbon-fiber composites. But for some, conventional substances just don't satisfy. Some engineers have built cars out of crazy stuff like hemp, paper and foam. Come along for a strange journey to a land of cars that crumble, rustle, stretch and squash.

Five Offbeat Cars Coming in 2011
Strange experiments are happening in the auto industry.
Companies are cross-pollinating different types of vehicles to create new breeds, and the results are sometimes perplexing.
For example, Nissan has turned its pudgy Murano into a convertible. Meanwhile, Range Rover is trying to show some concern for the environment by offering its smallest, most car-like SUV ever, the Evoque.
Both the Murano and Evoque are considered “crossovers,” which by definition are a mixed bag to begin with: They blend attributes of SUVs, wagons and minivans. So it seems these new variations represent the next level of crossing over.
The line between different kinds of cars is also getting hazier, driven in part by a focus on making smaller cars more appealing. Both Hyundai and Scion are launching compact cars that stray from the norm in terms of seating and overall packaging. The intention is to make them more practical and thus appeal to a wider audience.
Of the new vehicles coming in 2011, here are five that don’t quite fit typical moulds.
Ferrari FF
Graft the rear end of a station wagon onto a sports car and you get the Ferrari FF.
The FF is supposed to be Ferrari’s most practical model, a supercar the whole family can enjoy. It has four seats and a decently sized trunk, which is why the rear end is designed the way it is.

Porsche 918 RSR Racer
Porsche has rolled out a race-bred version of the company's 918 Spyder Concept at this year's Detroit Auto Show. Packing the same drivetrain as the track-proven 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car,
Porsche says that the 918 RSR will bring a whopping 767 combined horsepower to the party when it shows up in the paddock. A total of 563 of those ponies are provided by a 6.2-liter V8 that revs to an atmospheric 10,300 rpm. Porsche has partnered its beastly eight-pot with two electric motors capable of 75 kilowatts of juice positioned at each front wheel.
The 918 RSR stores braking energy in a flywheel accumulator stationed where the passenger seat would traditionally rest, and the tech allows the driver to summon up an extra bump in power for passing or acceleration. The pilot can command the boost in grunt for up to eight seconds.
Like the 918 Concept, the bones of the 918 RSR are built of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and the body was penned to pay respect the legendary racers like the 917 short-tail. Hit the jump for the press release.
