Dog Eats Wedding Ring

Dog Eats Wedding Ring

The dog ate my wedding ring! Wife recovers $4,500 band from pet's stomach after thinking burglar was to blame

An Albuquerque wife had the habit of putting her wedding ring on the nightstand beside her bed before falling asleep.

But one morning, when Rachelle Atkinson reached to put it back on, the ring had vanished without a trace.

She and her husband originally thought a thief broke in, and they were partially right. Except this thief has four legs, and lives with them.

Coraline, the family’s 10-month-old Basset hound, had eaten the $4,500 diamond ring for a midnight snack.

‘She was the only one in our room, so we immediately looked at her and she looked guilty,’ Mrs Atkinson told KOB-TV.

After they figured out that Coraline was the culprit, Mrs Atkinson’s diligent husband Scott spent the next ten days sifting through the dog’s waste.

‘I had to go through all the “poos” every day and squish them up and make sure there were no hard lumps in there.'

He added: 'That wasn’t much fun.'

But a trip to the family veterinarian revealed that Mr Atkinson’s work was all for naught, as the ring was too heavy to pass naturally.

The vet first put Coraline under, and then inserted a tube through her throat to fish out the ring. After several hours and numerous tries, the ring was out.

Neither the ring nor the dog were any worse for the wear.

Basset hounds have a tendency to eat rocks, vets say.

Mrs Atkinson now keeps her wedding ring out of sight – and out of reach – from the hungry dog.

‘She’s a good dog and she’s just a wonderful addition to our family but we’ll never forget this - the ring and (Coraline) have gotten more expensive,’ Mrs Atkinson told KOB.com
