Frank Buckles, Last World War I Doughboy, Is Dead at 110

Frank Buckles, who drove an Army ambulance in France in 1918 and came to symbolize a generation of embattled young Americans as the last of the World War I doughboys, died Sunday at his home in Charles Town, W. Va. He was 110.
His death was announced by a family spokesman, David DeJonge, The Associated Press said.
He was only a corporal and he never got closer than 30 or so miles from the Western Front trenches, but Mr. Buckles became something of a national treasure as the last living link to the two million men who served inthe American Expeditionary Forces in France in “the war to end all wars.”
Frail, stooped and hard of hearing, but sharp of mind, Mr. Buckles was named grand marshal of the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington in 2007. He was a guest at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day 2007 for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He was honored by Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon and met with President George W. Bush at the White House in March 2008.

Do SAT Scores Prove States Need It?

Does collective bargaining make for better or worse test scores?

With Republican-controlled legislatures and state houses from Wisconsin to Oklahoma attempting to strip state workers of collective bargaining rights, figures on the combined SAT and ACT college entrance test scores in states without them are proving fodder for the ongoing debate.

As republished in The Economist, a chart purporting to show that combined SAT and ACT scores in the five U.S. states without collective bargaining rights are among the worst in the country quickly became a viral hit on Twitter and Facebook. Indeed, this reporter first saw the information via Andrew Sullivan's blog, which linked to The Economist, a highly trusted source of information. The specific data showed the following combined SAT/ACT rankings for the states without collective bargaining rights for teachers:

Sex and the City 2 stars named worst actresses at Razzie Awards
It is the one Hollywood awards ceremony where no celebrity wants to win.
But this year the cast of Sex and the City 2 were among those who were called out at the 31st Annual Golden Raspberry Awards at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in LA.
The satirical ceremony, traditionally held the night before the Academy Awards, honour the year’s worst films and actors.
Sex and the City 2 opened last year to lacklustre ticket sales and even worse reviews.
And all four of its stars – Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon – collectively took the worst actress category during the event.

The Evolution of Touchscreen Gaming

The Evolution of Touchscreen Gaming
The Evolution of Touchscreen Gaming
Touchscreen gaming has never been bigger. The next 12 months could quite possibly see an unprecedented trio of new touch-sensitive portables hitting stores: the Nintendo 3DS, the Sony NGP, and (fingers crossed) a new iPad will all be vying to get their hands on your gaming fingers in the months to come. But while most gamers’ first exposure to playing games with their fingertips is likely to have been around 2004 with the all-conquering Nintendo DS, it was by no means the first touchscreen-equipped gaming device to hit the market.

On Thursday, the space shuttle Discovery blasted into space for its final mission. People around the world watched the liftoff, but only a lucky few got to see the shuttle from the skies.

Passengers on a flight from Orlando, Florida to Richmond, Virginia were treated to an unexpected kind of entertainment when they saw the Shuttle off of the left side of the plane.

One quick-thinking man named Neil Monday captured the experience on his iPhone. After he uploaded the two-minute clip to the Web, searches shot into the stratosphere. The video has been featured by multiple blogs and news agencies, including MSNBC.

Elizabeth Taylor has led a big life. "'The more the better' has always been my motto," she once said. Indeed with three Oscars, eight marriages, 12 best-selling fragrances, and countless carats of gemstones, she is a one-woman epic, dressed for the part with towering sculptures of ebony hair and artfully blended sweeps of jewel-toned shadow. Yet, despite her timeless beauty, juicy personal history, and legendary film performances, her most extraordinary role has been that of a tireless fundraiser for AIDS awareness. For Taylor, living large means giving big.

The honor of tallest building in the world goes to the Burj Khalifa, which soars above downtown Dubai at 2,716.5 feet. Its 160 stories are filled with offices, 900 private residences, the Armani Hotel, a four-story fitness complex and an observation deck on the 124th floor. Since it opened, the Burj Khalifa has dwarfed all former "world's tallest buildings," including this one in Toronto.

Jon Cryer Twitter Reports "Fake"

Jon Cryer Twitter Reports "Fake"
Various media outlets and websites reported that Jon Cryer broke his silence about Charlie Sheen and the shutdown of his hit sitcom, "Two and a Half Men."

Those reports are wrong. The reports said he tweeted his thoughts about the toxic, controversial fight between Sheen and the show's producer, Chuck Lorre.

Cryer's publicist told NBCLA that those reports are "fake." And she says Jon Cryer doesn't even have a Twitter account.

The fake tweet read, "It's too sad! Sorry guys, that you must hear so bad news! I'm also shocked!"

Twitter has since shut down the @JonNivenCryer account.

A Geek of Every Color

A Geek of Every Color
A Geek of Every Color
For Black History Month, we look at the inner life of the black geek
There was a time when being a geek -- or a nerd, for that matter -- was just about the worst thing you could be. But with the emergence of a geek culture unashamed to wave its freak flag high, we now find ourselves living in a geek-friendly society. There is no longer shame in being an adult who reads comic books, watches animation, plays video games or enjoys any of the other things that often are attributed to geeks, nerds and other various socially challenged misfits.
Despite an increasingly visible audience that drives much of contemporary pop culture, being a geek or a nerd is still traditionally thought of as a domain exclusive to white people (and select Asian cultures). There is, however, an entire culture of black geeks that has struggled to make itself more visible in the larger world of geekdom. And while the term black geek may conjure up images of Jaleel White as Urkel on "Family Matters" or Alfonso Ribeiro on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," the contemporary black geek is actually more like rapper Mos Def or actor Donald Glover on "Community."
The 21st-century black geek is an offshoot of the middle-class buppie and the old-school b-boy culture, both of which were immersed in a deep-rooted Afrocentric understanding of the world at large. Black geeks grew up reading books like "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" and listening to Parliament-Funkadelic, while watching reruns of "The Partridge Family" and flipping through the pages of Spider-Man comic books. Black pop culture historians like Fab 5 Freddy, the original host of "Yo! MTV Raps," and writer Nelson George represent this crossroads of diverse cultural experiences that define the black geek.
Though I cannot speak for all black geeks, as one myself, I have lived a life of athletic ineptitude and literary appreciation that has made me seem like an oddball. There seems to be a sad stereotype that says black people must all excel in sports, while never cracking open a book. But I'm here to say that some of us love to read and couldn't make a free throw if our lives depended on it. And with that in mind, here's a glimpse at some of what defines black geekiness, and how we make due in a world that seldom caters to us specifically.

Ice Age Child Found in Prehistoric Alaskan Home

Ice Age Child Found in Prehistoric Alaskan Home
Cremation site hints at how first Americans lived—and where they came from.
A team works in an excavation trench at the Alaskan site where an Ice Age child's remains were found.

In what's now central Alaska, one of the first Americans—only three years old at the time—was laid to rest in a pit inside his or her house 11,500 years ago, a new excavation reveals.

The ancient home site and human remains—the oldest known in subarctic North America—provide an unprecedented glimpse into the daily lives of Ice Age Americans, scientists say.

What's more, if the remains yield usable DNA, the child could help uncover just who was living on the North American side of the land bridge that likely still connected the Americas to Asia at the time, experts added.

One thing that apparently isn't a mystery is how the child was memorialized.

Charlie Sheen rant targets Chuck Lorre
Charlie Sheen let loose on "Two and a Half Men" co-creator Chuck Lorre earlier in the week, telling radio

Sheen didn't respond well to the decision to halt production for the season on "Two and a Half Men." In a letter posted on TMZ, Sheen had more harsh words and vitriol for Lorre.

Sheen writes, "What does this say about Haim Levine [Chuck Lorre] after he tried to use his words to judge and attempt to degrade me. I gracefully ignored this folly for 177 shows ... I fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can't handle my power and can't handle the truth. I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels especially if they wind up in my octagon. Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words -- imagine what I would have done with my fire breathing fists. I urge all my beautiful and loyal fans who embraced this show for almost a decade to walk with me side-by-side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong."

Babies in Frontier States Have More Unusual Names

Babies born in newer U.S. states have more distinctive names compared with their counterparts in older regions such as New England, a new study finds.
It turns out, the same values that pushed adventurous individuals into new territories as our country was being populated may still show up in the names their descendants give to babies, a new study finds.
In more recently established states, such as Washington and Oregon, parents tend to choose less common baby names, while parents in "older" areas, such as the original 13 states, go for more popular names.
Frontiers typically have fewer established institutions or infrastructure, and often occupy harsh environments. Early pioneers couldn't rely on others for help in such sparsely populated areas.

Prospects Look to Shine at NFL Combine

When 329 NFL hopefuls gather to work out for all 32 professional teams, Heisman winner Cam Newton is one future pick who should cement his high draft status.
Though it's written off by some as nothing more than a meat market, the NFL Scouting Combine, which kicks off Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis, very much serves a purpose.
The one opportunity for the top 329 draft prospects to work out for all 32 NFL teams under one roof, the Combine provides a level playing field and the chance for a young man to improve his draft stock. The difference between being a first-round pick and a third-day selection is several million dollars. In Indianapolis this week, any of the 329 kids on hand can go and earn that money.

Fresh Faces at the Academy Awards

Fresh Faces at the Academy Awards
Fresh Faces at the Academy Awards
This year's class of Oscar nominees includes more than a few talents who've been down the red carpet on Hollywood's biggest night before, whether as honored nominees or as ecstatic winners. Annette Bening, for one example, has earned her fourth nomination for "The Kids Are All Right." Geoffrey Rush, meanwhile, is seeing if he'll take home his second Oscar, with his work in "The King's Speech" as his fourth nomination. Of the first-time nominees this year, James Franco and Christian Bale are already established fixtures as both stars and actors: Franco's making a game out of his fame, while it's hard to see the man who redeemed Batman, to the ringing of record-breaking box-office, as a newcomer.
But many of this year's Oscar first-timers are lesser-known -- or new stars in incendiary debuts, or long-established talents from here or from abroad finally catching Hollywood's eye. With that in mind, here's a quick guide to the fresh-faced first-time nominees of the 2010 Oscars, telling you where you can find their earlier work and where you're going to see them next
