Older people can be more likely to post falsehoods about themselves online, the survey also found. Only six per cent of under-25s said they had lied to try to attract a partner, such as via a dating website, compared to 12 per cent of over-25s. Baby boomers were more than three times as likely to have lied to enhance their career prospects as those in their twenties, too.

“Our research raises some serious questions around privacy and the boundaries people are willing to cross in their own online dealings,” said Simon Ellson from Norton.
