There are many beliefs underlying the funeral customs and practices used by a culture to remember the dead people. Customs vary between cultures and between religious affiliations within cultures. People know about some common cremations, but few know about strange and scary funeral customs.

Ritual Cannibalism

Such rite is based on beliefs that eating a part of the dead like the heart, liver, brain to gain wisdom or courage. This practice is participated by the Neanderthals, the slower hilly cousins.


Hanging Coffins of Bo

The hanging coffins like a macabre Chandelier on a moon of Saturn. People can find a few hundred ancient coffins dangle precariously on the side of a cliff. An extinct ethnicity of China preferred their dead as auspiciously displayed as possible.




Sky Burial

This custom consists of cutting a person's body in "strategic" places and placing the loved one on top of a mountain or temple. This is appealing to the majestic feeding vultures. The birds will pick apart the flesh until there is a pile of bones left.




Sati

Sati is an ancient Hindu practice. The dead are burned in a funeral pyre. More strangely, the widow has to burn herself alive in immolation during her husband's funeral. Such practitioners believe that her ultimate act of marital loyalty makes her become a goddess.




Sokushunbutsu

A couple of dozen of Japanese Buddhist priests mummify themselves to gain the self-denial award. It takes the monk years to mummify with initial diet and then exercise regimen to burn away all fat. They empty the body of bodily fluids, crawl into a box and stay there in the lotus position until death.
