'Thor 2' release moved, director announced

'Thor 2' release moved, director announced
'Thor 2' release moved, director announced, Of all the films that Marvel Studios has released and plans to release, "Thor" was probably the biggest gamble. Introducing a fantasy based character and world into the more science based setting established by "Iron Man" was no small feat. There was always the risk that audiences would simply reject the fantasy elements such as the lead character being from another world and possessing what is essentially a magic hammer. However, the gamble paid off and to date "Thor" has made over $437 million worldwide. Unsurprisingly Deadline.com has learned that the studio has greenlit a sequel to be released July 26, 2013, though they will have to find a new director as Kenneth Branaugh will not be returning to the franchise.

Branaugh was not the first director attached to "Thor" but he has been given a great deal of well deserved credit for its success. His experience in Shakespeare helped him in keeping the scenes that take place in the realm of Asgard both grandiose and relatable. The royal turmoil that took place and lead up to Thor's banishment to Earth felt very much like something from the Elizabethan stage. There was no specific reason given for Branaugh's departure from the franchise, though it was described as "mutual and amicable." This would indicate that it was likely Branaugh who wanted to move onto other things rather than some sort of creative divide between him and Marvel. It's been suggested that he may serve as a producer on "Thor 2."

What kind of story "Thor 2" tackles will likely depend quite a bit on what transpires in "The Avengers," which is currently shooting under the direction of Joss Whedon. In the upcoming super-hero team up movie Thor is one of numerous heroes featured. However Thor will also be joined by his troublesome brother Loki who is expected to be one of the main antagonists in "The Avengers." How large Loki's part actually ends up being in that film is still unknown but impacting two major characters in the "Thor" franchise will most definitely impact where the sequel can pick up from. Chris Hemsworth as the titular character is the only confirmed returning actor at present. Given the large and talented cast of the first film, including Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Rene Russo, it will be interesting to see how many will return for the sequel. The release date of July 26, 2013 is an interesting one as Marvel has already announced "Iron Man 3" to be released May 3 of that year. It would seem that the release of "The Avengers," which everything has been steadily building towards, will not slow down Marvel's aggressive release schedule for its characters. It's worth noting that the super hero movies released this year since "Thor" haven't done as well as that film did. It's lead some to believe that releasing so many super hero films so close to each other is burning audiences out. If "Captain America" succeeds it will disprove that notion, but if it suffers at the box office it would not be surprising to see Marvel put more distance between "Iron Man 3" and "Thor 2."
